About Old Colstonians RFC
Community. Inclusivity. Development
built on
community
Old Colstonians RFC is the alumni rugby club of Colston’s School, now Collegiate School, whose roots go back to the early 18th century in Bristol and a long tradition of competitive schoolboy rugby.
Drawing players from generations of former pupils, and occasionally welcoming talent from further afield, the club has maintained a strong link with the school and its grounds, today playing in the RFU Gloucester leagues and bringing together everyone from recent leavers to seasoned veterans.
That continuity has underpinned a competitive yet social spirit, with Old Colstonians sides known for expansive rugby, strong home support and a reputation as a tough proposition in local Bristol and Gloucestershire fixtures, while recent seasons have seen the club continue to post notable results and grow a squad that blends youthful energy with deep experience.
Driving the
Future
The school’s rugby programme is widely recognised as one of the most successful in the country, and Old Colstonians RFC has benefited from a conveyor belt of talented players who have gone on to shine in the professional era.
Nearly 50 former Colston’s and Collegiate pupils have played professional rugby, including internationals and Premiership regulars such as Olly Barkley, Jordan Crane, Lee Mears, Tom Varndell and Jake Polledri, alongside England women’s international Amber Reed.
The club has also welcomed future stars from overseas, notably 2015 Rugby World Cup‑winning All Black Ben Smith, who spent his 2005 gap year at Colston’s and turned out for Old Colstonians in the Gloucester leagues. Many of these players began their journeys on the same pitches the club still calls home, and their achievements reflect the ambition and standards that Old Colstonians RFC aims to live up to every weekend as a proud focal point for the wider Old Colstonian and Collegiate community.
